When will women ever begin to receive the kind of respect their counterparts receive? In the next 1000 years? I am a woman and I do not want to wait until then. I want equal respect now.

Funny? Nonplussed? Don’t be. Let me tell you a short story to help you understand where I am coming from. I recently was speaking with a friend who happens to be a man in an open space. Did I fail to mention that this open space was crowded? Well, while busy with our conversation two guys running around bumped into me. I nearly fell as it was unexpected. So, what happened next? Did they apologize? Oh yes, they did but not to me. They instead apologized to my friend. After the apology, I kept staring at them, so they decided that apologizing to me is also a good idea so they did. Well, pissed me was then forced to ask them if my friend was the one they bumped into or I. So, they apologized once more to me but again to my friend. Let me stop here.

I have come to realize that our society has been unfair when it comes to respecting women. The man has always been accorded more respect. While the ‘inferior’ human is accorded lesser respect. But isn’t it high time this phenomenon begins to change? Every woman is equal to a man and is in no way inferior to any man. And for this, she should be respected equally when she earns or deserves it.

Every human is deserving of respect. And every human who has enough empathy to go round should know this. It is unfair that both men and women respect men accordingly but when it’s time to do the same for women, it usually is a different story. Our society always will find a way to accord that respect to a man in her life or around her.

It is so disgusting that our society doesn’t believe in a woman standing alone, she always has to have a man standing beside her or she standing behind him. For this reason, a woman is respected by that man. It is believed that where a woman is she is under the control of a man. She cannot lead. He has to lead. She is not strong. He is strong. She doesn’t have the mental capacity. He has the mental capacity. She couldn’t have achieved this without a man. And for this reason, the man is accorded greater respect.

And there again is conditional respect. In many patriarchal societies, for a woman to be given that respect (half) she has to meet up to the toxic feminity standards, gender stereotypes, and act the gender roles carefully arranged for her. Otherwise, she gets no respect.

Times are, however, changing now and more women are evolving to a stage where they know their self-worth and will not take less but equal. And whether they are given equal respect or not, they are taking it by force. And if for whatsoever reason they are given lesser respect, they will return the favor with lesser respect as well.

Attaining gender equality in our society has been really slow. But to get there really fast we need our society to begin respecting women accordingly.

So, I ask again, when will women even begin to receive the kind of respect their counterparts receive? The answer is now! No way are we waiting till 1000 years come. No way am I waiting till1000 years come.
